My reaction:

This is sad and true. I’m not a fan but I love her and support her. It’s not everyday that you see a Filipino making it big overseas. And I agree. In Filipino show business, you will notice there are only few notable ones who can really act—the rest is all good-looking. Then again, I am not here to criticize. I only want to say the truth that we fail to see.

We Filipinos love misery and have the tendency to want our fellowmen miserable too. Oh the shame. :( This is really, really sad.

Other than that. I do hope this is the beginning of the end of crab mentality. :) We seriously have to support each other.

My father calls it jealousy, badly handled cases of insecurities and the usual - crab mentality. I, on the other hand, share the same suspicions, but I refuse to be argumentative unless I am well informed of the situation.

I confess, that when it comes to the Filipino’s (some, at least) severe dislike shrouding the “international sensation” Charice Pempengco, I am at loss. I have heard of her and her voice, have watched some of her performances via youtube, but whilst I am convinced that her success is well-deserved with that great talent of hers, I am not swayed. Or gravitated towards her even. I like her, but do not love her. Neither do I dislike nor hate her. So, does that make me indifferent? Truthfully speaking, I blame this on my personality - I am rarely ever interested in entertainment and all those pile of shitty fads that surround it.

And so yesterday, it has come to my knowledge that she’ll star in Glee - a show I watch and like, but not mad about. It saddens me, how her, our countrymen shoot all those underhanded insults towards her. I deny such claims pertaining to my great sense of nationalism, for I only possess so little of it, but I am aware that everybody must be treated with respect. And Charice although not a pretty pretty face, has a great voice, so why the hatred?

Why do people treat someone possessing obvious talents so badly, when they can’t say anything against those entertainers who seem to have been misplaced in the wrong field? You know, those pretty faces making it big in the music industry with a patronising crowd behind and with shrill, ear grating voices to boot. Whoever said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder must be smoking crack when he said such a statement. Humans are always attracted to physical beauty first, more than anything else.

I guess, in the end, it just boils down to personal preferences and nothing much can be done with it? However, I do remember a good British friend of mine from work say:

“You Filipinos are racists. Not the usual racists, but you know, you discriminate and backstab each other. When one is more successful, the other tries his best to pull him down.”

I lowered my head, ashamed.
